SEED Ventures discusses the creation of the sustainability platform 'What's the Alternative?'

Nature's blessings are abundant, yet our efforts to reciprocate have fallen short. With the climate crisis looming, it's our responsibility to create a brighter future. That's why SEED Ventures, a proactive collective of developers and investors dedicated to social impact, has launched "What's the Alternative" (WTA). This innovative sustainability platform sparks global dialogue, offering practical solutions and alternative choices. In an interview with Shaista Ayesha, CEO of SEED Ventures, we explore the motivations, goals, and transformative impact of this initiative.

1.What local and global trends did you observe that inspired the creation of WTA?

We observed a heightened recognition of the need to address environmental challenges globally. This increased awareness led to a realization of the interconnectedness between the environment, wellness, and lifestyle, which inspired the creation of three pillars for a holistic approach to sustainability. There has been a surge in interest and demand for sustainable alternatives and solutions among individuals, communities, businesses, and policymakers. The transformative power of technology and digital platforms also played a significant role in inspiring the inception of What's the Alternative.

2.What do you hope to accomplish by offering alternatives with sustainability in mind?

By offering sustainable alternatives while prioritizing well-being and good lifestyle habits, we aim to create a paradigm shift towards a sustainable future. Our goal is to empower individuals with knowledge and resources for informed choices that minimize their environmental impact and prioritize well-being. Through these efforts, we seek meaningful change on both individual and systemic levels, contributing to a more sustainable and equitable world for future generations.

3.Are there any specific sustainability practices or lifestyle changes that you personally found challenging to adopt, and how did you overcome those challenges?

As a social impact specialist, I faced challenges in adopting sustainable practices, such as reducing single-use plastics and minimizing waste. I overcame these hurdles by educating myself, exploring alternatives, and implementing changes gradually. Sustainability is a journey, and I believe that every small step counts. With persistence and a willingness to learn, I have overcome these challenges and remain dedicated to sustainable living.

4.What is the most rewarding aspect of running "What's the Alternative?" for you personally?

The most fulfilling aspect of leading WTA is the ability to create a tangible impact in people's lives and contribute to a more sustainable future in multiple ways. It brings immense joy to witness individuals, communities, and businesses embracing sustainable practices and sharing their stories of success. Moreover, the sense of community and collective impact that WTA cultivates brings profound satisfaction. Personally, knowing that we are empowering and inspiring others to take action is the ultimate reward.

5.What concerns were not being addressed by conversations focusing on sustainability that you hoped WTA could address?

While observing sustainability conversations, we noticed a common oversight: the tendency to primarily focus on environmental aspects while neglecting the social, economic, and cultural dimensions of sustainability. Determined to bridge this gap, we made it our mission to integrate these dimensions into our platform. We firmly believe that genuine sustainability encompasses not only environmental considerations but also the broader impacts on communities, equity, and overall well-being. By incorporating these aspects, we aim to nurture a more comprehensive understanding of sustainability and foster conversations that embrace its multifaceted nature.

6.What central themes does the platform focus on and why were they chosen?

At the core of our platform are three central themes: environment, wellness, and lifestyle. We deliberately selected these themes as they encompass crucial areas where both individual and collective actions can make a substantial positive impact on the environment and society. Within these themes, we prioritize highlighting topics such as sustainable consumption, biodiversity conservation, and climate action while simultaneously addressing topics such as incorporating mindfulness, choosing minimalism, maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and becoming the best version of yourself through fitness. Our intention is to ignite inspiration and empowerment, motivating individuals to make sustainable choices and actively contribute to meaningful change in their daily lives and communities.

7.Why is encouraging a solution-oriented outlook important for the platform?

Instilling a solution-oriented outlook is a crucial aspect of our platform as it enables individuals and communities to become active participants in the journey towards sustainability, well-being, and lifestyle. By centering our focus on solutions, we transcend the overwhelming sense of crisis and embrace a mindset of possibility and positive action. This approach stimulates innovation, collaboration, and motivation among our audience, propelling tangible change and serving as an inspiration for others to join in. Our firm conviction lies in the belief that by highlighting practical solutions and sharing success stories, we can cultivate an atmosphere of optimism that motivates people to take meaningful action.

Are there any upcoming events, campaigns, or partnerships that you're particularly excited about?

We have our inaugural event, EcoSummit, in collaboration with OICCI, taking place at the Chambers of Commerce Building, Karachi on July 12, 2023. This event will bring together industry leaders to discuss alternative solutions for reducing environmental harm and innovative ways to promote sustainability.
