Hassan Abuzar- Behind the Glam
1. Hi Hassan, tell us a little about yourself. How did your journey in makeup artistry begin?
I’ve always been drawn to transformation, the power of colour, texture, and creativity. What started as experimenting on my cousins and friends slowly turned into something deeper. I would watch runway shows and YouTube videos of international makeup artists. That is what pushed me to pursue it professionally.
2. What was the moment you knew this was your passion?
The first time I saw a client of mine look in the mirror and smile, that was it for me. The feeling of creating something that makes someone feel beautiful and empowered was addictive. Then a very good stylist friend referred me to a brand’s web shoot where they liked my work and continued working with me. There I made more contacts and kept getting more shoots and clients.
3. Who or what inspires your work the most?
I take inspiration from everything, skin tones, art, fashion, and even moods. But I deeply admire artists like Pat McGrath and Hindash for their creativity and precision. Still, I always try to add my own touch, something that feels authentic and original.
4. What has been your biggest or most memorable project so far?
Every project teaches me something new, but one of my most memorable moments was working on a cultural Afghan-themed shoot where the entire concept revolved around minimalism and raw beauty. Seeing it published and appreciated reminded me how powerful subtlety can be.
5. Do you have a dream client or collaboration in mind?
I would love to collaborate with international beauty brands like MAC and magazines like Vogue and Forbes, brands that celebrate diversity and creativity. As for clients, I honestly believe that every person I do makeup on brings me an equal amount of excitement. I learn something new every day, so I have never really aspired to work with a celebrity.
6. How would you describe your signature makeup style?
Effortlessly flawless and glam. I love skin that looks like skin- radiant, sculpted, but never heavy. My signature is enhancing natural features with balanced glamour. Kohl eyes and bold eyeliner are what I love the most.
7. What is your go-to product that never fails you on set?
A good setting spray and a lightweight foundation are my holy grails. But if I had to pick one, I would say a creamy highlighter. It brings life back into any look and photographs beautifully every single time.
8. Winter is here. What makeup trend are you loving this season?
I am loving soft, dewy complexions paired with bold, blurred lips. There is something so chic about that cozy, velvety finish. It is fresh but still winter-appropriate. Plus, can we please bring fuchsia and magenta lip colours back?
9. A makeup trend you think is overrated right now?
Overly heavy contouring. It can easily take away from someone’s natural beauty. I believe in sculpting subtly. Makeup should enhance, not mask.
10. If you could share one gatekept makeup trick everyone should know, what would it be?
Always prep your skin properly. Hydration changes everything. Spend on good skin prep products. Even the best foundation will not sit right if your base is not prepped. Good skin prep is truly 70 percent of a flawless look. Also, too much powdering is unnecessary. More creams and very little powder works best.
