When Mitti De Baway was first announced, the headlines practically wrote themselves.
Mahira Khan and Wahaj Ali were coming together for the first time. Two of Pakistani entertainment's biggest stars, one highly anticipated project and enough curiosity around the pairing to generate conversation before audiences had seen a single frame.
Then the trailer arrived. And somewhere between the sweeping landscapes of rural Punjab, an enormous ensemble, striking production design and two actors almost disappearing into their characters, Mitti De Baway started looking like something much bigger and perhaps that is the trailer's biggest achievement.
It doesn't feel like a project built around two famous faces with a world constructed behind them. It feels like an entire world was built first and everyone from its biggest stars to the people behind the camera stepped inside it.
The response suggests audiences felt that too.
Since its release, the trailer has generated an exceptional response across social media, trended in conversations on X and appeared on YouTube trending charts across Pakistan and international markets including Bangladesh, UAE, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia. Viewers across borders have praised its scale, cinematography, performances and distinctive setting.
The appreciation hasn't been limited to audiences either, with actors and members of the entertainment fraternity publicly responding to the trailer and adding to the conversation around one of Green Entertainment's biggest upcoming projects.
When Mahira and Wahaj Become Bilquees and Bala
The first-ever pairing of Mahira Khan and Wahaj Ali remains an obvious attraction, but the more interesting conversation now is about what they appear to have done with their characters.
Mahira's Bilquees has presence, authority and intensity. Wahaj's Bala carries an entirely different energy, raw and unpredictable, yet equally commanding.
Together, they don't immediately register as two stars brought together for an event pairing. There are moments in the trailer where you simply want to understand Bilquees and Bala.
That distinction is important to producer and Green Entertainment Executive Director Tehreem Chaudhary, currently the youngest television producer in Pakistan.
Speaking about the project, Tehreem says:
"What makes Mitti de Baway particularly special to me is how deeply everyone involved believed in what we were building. From the director and cast to the production team and, of course, Green, there was a shared understanding that this had to be more than just another drama. Every department brought its best to it and I think Green may have set itself the rather unreasonable task of competing with its own record for grand productions.
Wahaj and Mahira have given this project an extraordinary amount of themselves. They didn't simply play Bala and Bilquees; they lived with them. There came a point where we couldn't imagine anyone else in these roles. Wahaj pulled Bala off the page with such conviction, and Mahira brought the same ownership to Bilquees, that when you watch them together, you don't feel like you are watching Wahaj and Mahira, you feel like you are watching Bala and Bilquees.
And our director Wajahat Hussain truly understood the assignment, taking the vision even further. For me, that is what makes a project special: when a vision that begins at the channel is carried through every person who touches the story and comes back to the screen bigger than any one individual. Mitti de Baway has that collective ownership, and I think audiences will feel it."
That collective ownership may explain why the trailer feels so cohesive.
Director Syed Wajahat Hussain has approached Mitti De Baway as a complete visual universe, while Faiza Iftikhar's writing gives that scale a story and characters to serve.
The depth continues through an ensemble featuring Junaid Khan, Amar Khan, Aena Khan, HinaAfridi, Noor ul Hasan, Sohail Ahmed, Syed Fazal Hussain, Faryal Mehmood and Ahmed Randhawa, among others, making the world around Bilquees and Bala feel populated with stories of its own.
It also reflects an ambition Green Entertainment has increasingly made part of its identity. Since its inception, Green’s projects may inhabit remarkably different worlds, but the willingness to back distinctive stories and give creators room to build them has remained consistent.
Perhaps Tehreem's joke about Green competing with its own record isn't entirely a joke.
Mitti De Baway doesn't look like an attempt to replicate what worked before. It looks like an attempt to go further and its trailer has given audiences a reason to come for the stars, but stay for the world they have become a part of.
